From Clutterbug to Tidying Wonder

If you feel like you’re the only one who’s been trying forever to keep your home tidy without lasting success, don’t worry – you are not alone. I’ve been where you are; for most of my life I had strong attachments to things which reminded me of special times and people in my life. I also had difficulty letting go of anything I thought ‘might come in handy’, both in my personal life and my work as a teacher. The result was a permanently full and cluttered home.

Organised but Untidy

The irony was that I love organising and always have. For as long as I can remember I’ve found joy in devising ingenious storage systems wherever I've lived or worked. But as long as the root cause of my clutter problem went unaddressed, my spaces wouldn’t stay tidy for very long.

The Challenge of Children

After my children were born, stuff seemed to enter the house at an alarming rate. Once they were old enough to move around and create mess of their own, any attempts to keep tidy seemed increasingly futile. I’d feel so pleased to get on top of things in one area of the house...only to find chaos had erupted in another.

The Turning Point

In 2014 I went to see The Minimalists on their UK Book Tour and had a huge ‘a-ha moment’. When I heard Joshua Fields-Millburn say, “In our experience, most ‘good organisers’ are nothing more than well-disguised hoarders", I laughed out loud but was filled with a sinking sense of recognition -
he was talking about me.

First Steps

So I began decluttering, but without any real method or plan. At times, tackling the mountains of stuff I had accumulated brought up unpleasant feelings of guilt and shame. On one of the regular breaks I needed to take, I found myself googling ‘decluttering emotions’. I needed to know it wasn’t just me who felt so awful confronting my belongings. This search led me to Marie Kondo.

The Book

I was inspired to order ‘The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying’ and read it cover to cover. Marie’s non-judgmental approach was exactly what I needed. I no longer felt ashamed for not being able to stay tidy - no one had taught me how. She gave me permission to keep some things that I loved - without any guilt - simply because they made me smile. Best of all, she had a plan, a unique method for tackling all my stuff, step-by-step, category by category. It all made perfect sense.

Tidy at Last

Once I’d embarked on one final tidying journey, I never looked back. Following the KonMari Method™ enabled me - finally - to declutter, to let go (with gratitude) and make room for more joy in my home and my life. With a partner, two children and an assortment of pets sharing my space, it’s not exactly Pinterest-perfect, but it is usually tidy. Whenever it isn’t - because of the reality of family life - it takes us minutes to restore order.

Cupboards and drawers each have a defined purpose. Everything has a place and every room is a pleasure to spend time in. There’s more space, physically, for fun and relaxation and more space, mentally, for me as a busy working mum. I’m experiencing increased levels of clarity, calm and creativity so I’m passionate about sharing this transformational experience with others.

Going it Alone?

Many people worldwide have attempted to ‘KonMari’ their homes the way I did, by following the book all by themselves. But I’m aware of the many times when I needed a helping hand, even a shoulder to cry on. It wasn’t always easy.

The whole process took me months and I know many people who’ve begun following the method, but then lost momentum and never completed their tidying journey. This is the reason why I’m so dedicated to supporting others as they put their homes in order in my role as a Certified KonMari™ Consultant.

How about you?

I promise it’s possible – if I can do it, then you can too.
